What started as a response to the growing demand for a Marlin tournament in the fishing community of Paggee in 2022, has now mushroomed into one of Port Maria's staple event for the month of November.
The event came out of the idea that Paggee needed to have it own tournament, because major events such as the ones held in Port Antonio and Oracabessa comprised many fishers from the Paggee village.
It started small but transpired into a massive tournament in 2023 with over 60 fishers going out to fish for marlin.
According to Event Co-ordinator Lacksdean Anderson "The Oracabessa tournament celebrated 20 years recently and they would have been participating in that tournament also in the Portland marlin tournament".
"So it was a no brainer for founder and conceptualizer Housen 'Jerry' Lawrence that Paggee needed to have its own because of the number of fishers that participated were predominantly Paggee fishers"
Anderson said "This year we have secured sponsorship from the likes of Pepsi, Yahama, Rain Forrest Seafoods, Essential music among others".
He says the aim is to get the wider community involved and to attract a large patronage, and apart from bringing on board sponsors including the political directorate on both sides. "We have also turn the tournament into a family event with several activities added to the day".
Fishers will go out at 8am and given up to 4pm to return.
During that time, there will be a number of events including treasure hunts, tug o war between fishers and patrons.
There will also be a talent show to climax the night and awards an ceremony
Seafood dishes and delights along with a refreshments bar will be available.
The event is free to the public.
Pagee beach is located 22 minutes from Ian Fleming International Airport - It is easily accessible as it is located along the main road, Tucker Circle.
