Legendary Jamaican singer Jimmy Cliff earned his first Silver certification in the United Kingdom for his 1993 cover of Johnny Nash’s classic hit “I Can See Clearly Now.”
The British Phonographic Industry (BPI) awarded the song the Brit Certified Silver Award on Friday, October 18, after it surpassed 200,000 sales in the UK, as reported by The Official Charts Company.
Originally written and recorded by Johnny Nash in 1972, “I Can See Clearly Now” became an international hit, known for its hopeful and uplifting message.
Cliff’s version of the song, however, brought renewed global attention to the track when it was featured in the soundtrack of the Disney film Cool Runnings, a popular movie based on the true story of Jamaica’s first Olympic bobsled team.
Cliff’s rendition of “I Can See Clearly Now” infused the track with a fresh energy, blending the upbeat essence of Nash’s original with the distinctive rhythmic influences of Jamaican music.
Upon its release, Cliff’s cover charted globally, reaching No. 23 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 18 on the UK Singles Chart.
He is one of the few reggae artists to receive an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and his influence continues to inspire musicians worldwide.
With a career spanning over five decades, Jimmy Cliff is celebrated as one of the pioneers of reggae and ska music.
